“Instead of following others, follow
your heart. Stand up for yourself. Stand up for others. Remember that courage
has a ripple effect.”
Seventh
grade students recently took part in a courage retreat held on the Visitation Campus.
Youth Frontiers, a Minneapolis
based company, delivered the retreat with the help of
seventh grade advisors and Upper School Peer Mentors.
Youth Frontiers is a
nonprofit organization that has been delivering programs to schools for over 20
years that build positive school communities and help young people realize the
importance of respecting themselves and others.
On the
Courage Retreat, the Youth Frontiers Staff focused on engaging students in
activities that encourage students to accept people for who they are. Students
actively participated in interactive games, small group discussions, and
presentations including Fear—Following
the Crowd and Courage—Following your
Heart.
Discussions were
facilitated by a small group leader and allowed students to talk more in-depth
about fear and courage within their school community. It was a great
opportunity to get to know others in their class better and build a sense of
community within their grade level. Please take a few minutes to ask your
daughter about her retreat experience.
“Watch your thoughts; they become
your words. Watch your words; they become your actions. Watch your actions;
they become your habits. Watch your habits; they become your character. Watch
your character for it will become your destiny.” (Frank Outlaw)
